SPRING TERM SPORTS ROUND UP
We have had a very busy term with lots of excellent participation. The year began with a Key Stage 1 football competition. Corey, Elliott, Gabriel, Liam and Natasha played very well, managing to win 2 games and lose just one. An excellent performance considering they had not trained as a team and the weather was so bad that the tournament was eventually called off! Despite the rain and cold all 5 children returned to school delighted with their performance.
Our next competition was the small schools basketball. Now that our pyramid no longer exists, we are included in the South Suffolk league which includes all the schools in that area. As basketball is so popular the organizers decided to run a small schools competition, having said that, the eventual winner had over 200 on role! Despite this, Bawdsey proved once again, that they were not going to be intimidated and put in some excellent paly. Emma and Finn demonstrated excellent attacking play while Marshall was solid in defence. All of the team contributed to an excellent 3rd place.
We also attended the football league competition hosted by Eyke School. The league is made up of the local schools that feed into Farlingaye High School and is divided into two. We are in the small schools league, which include Bawdsey, Hollesley, Eyke, Sandlings, Otley and Orford. Some excellent football was played and Bawdsey can be proud of its performance, but competition was fierce and we lost 2 games and drew 1.
The following day we had a team of 16 runners competing at Hollesley cross country competition. The teams were made up of Josh, Finn, Kian and Marshall in the Year 5/6 boys race, Freya, Libby, Emma and Martha in the Year 5/6 girls race, Angelica, Matilda, Ayla and Natasha in the 3/4 girls race and Uly, Naham, Fergus and Diogo in the Year3/4 boys race. This year, only the top 10 were given their position in the race and with over 40 in each race this was quite an achievement and I was delighted that Freya and Ayla were both awarded a place in the top 10 with the other runners also putting in good performances on a long and difficult course.
The next event was the swimming gala which took place on 15th March. All the children were looking forward to this event as they had not been in the pool since before Christmas. Everyone enjoyed the event and demonstrated some excellent swimming. We managed to finish 5th in the event which was an excellent result.
On the 16th March we were delighted to welcome Ali Furlong and Ben Wallis, our School games Organisers, to assembly. They presented us with our Gold award which is for participation in school games events, as well as including all children in sport, as well as encouraging some children to take a role in the management and organisation of sport and finally creating links between ourselves and local sports clubs. We are very proud of our achievement as it takes us into the top 10 of schools in the country.
Finally the term was rounded off by the Royal Hospital School Cross Country Event. We took 8 runners to this event with Finn, Josh, Charlie and Kian representing Year 6 boys and Freya, Libby, Emma and Martha in the Year 6 girls’ race. This is a big step-up from the Hollesley event with around 130 children in each race and a much longer and undulating course. All of our children finished and remained cheerful throughout well done to the boys’ team who were predominantly Year 5 and to Freya and Martha who finished in the top 30.
Unfortunately, our hockey players have been disappointed this term, as the hockey competition has had to be cancelled due to bad weather twice. We hope that another event will be scheduled for next term but our team has played well during lessons and enjoyed the experience of playing the Quicksticks game.
All the children in school should be congratulated on their sporting achievements this term, either as part of their weekly P.E. lessons or when representing school in competition. Everyone has a positive attitude to all areas of sport and it is a real joy to watch their confidence grow as they gain more skill.
