Medium term plans for class 2 (Autumn 2)
History and Geography
We will be finishing our project on Ancient Egypt by looking at mummies, gods and the afterlife. This will involve research on the computer and from books and presenting our findings using art and ICT.
We will then move on to study Modern Egypt: the River Nile, desert regions, Aswan dam, impact of tourism and everyday life.
RE
During this half of the term we will be looking at Hindus and inspirational people within the Hindu culture. In particular children will be finding out about Ganesha and Hanuman; the story of Rama and Sita; and investigating the names of some Hindu leaders and influential figures.
French
We continue to learn new words and explore French culture learning about ways to greet people and introduce ourselves with confidence!
Literacy
This term we are basing our writing around Howard Carter and his quest to find the tomb of Tutankhamen. With this in mind, we are writing descriptions, diaries, letters, biographies and adventure stories. Our focus has been on using descriptive language and to open our sentences in different ways.
Maths
In maths we are focussing on place value through adding in multiples of ten and one hundred as well as adding using different strategies. We are practising placing numbers on empty number lines and using these skills to round to the nearest 10/100. Our understanding of place value has helped us to add and subtract larger numbers by partitioning and using columns. We are also learning times tables and developing a greater understanding of multiplication and division. We are also learning to double and half and using these skills to understand fractions.
Design and Technology
This term we are creating vehicles that will be powered by elastic bands. We will look at a range of different types of vehicles on which to base our designs. Then we will design and make our models and then test them by finding out which one goes the furthest and the reasons why. The children will then be given the opportunity to modify their designs before finally evaluating their strengths and weaknesses. We will also be making sweets for Christmas and looking at examples of suitable containers for our sweets. We are then going to design and make our boxes which will link with the work on shape we have been doing in maths particularly making 3D structures from a net. Finally the children will evaluate their work.
Science
In science we will look at plants, studying the function of each part of flowering plants and trees. We will explore the requirements for plant life and growth. Finally we will look at the relationship between plants and animals and the role that plants play in our survival.
We will also look at animals including humans and study their nutrition. We will investigate the different diets eaten by animals and classify carnivores, herbivores and omnivores. We will look at food chains and classify living things as producers or consumers. Finally we will group foods into those needed for growth, activity and keeping healthy and how the knowledge of food groups can help build a healthy diet.
